OBESITY SURGERY Consultation and treatment in Vienna

Obesity is a chronic disease, characterized in particular by excessive weight with a body mass index of more than 30 kg/m², but also reduces life quality. The increase of people suffering from obesity in the Western industrial nations is in particular due to an unhealthy nutrition and lack of physical activity. Here, in particular excessive eating and sugar play an important role.

Excessive weight and obesity correlate with an increased risk for additional and consequential diseases. A high BMI entails the danger of suffering from high blood pressure, cardiac infarct, diabetes type 2, sleep apnea, and arthrosis. Moreover, many patients do not only suffer from the bodily impairments of obesity, such as reduced power, increased sweating, heartburn or gout, but also social exclusion. This psychological stress furthers social isolation and an unhealthy nutritional behavior – a negative circle is reinforced.

In order to break it, a segment of visceral surgery deals with the treatment of obesity. Our obesity surgery in Vienna is comprised of a team of specialists helping patients fight obesity. Surgical changes in the intestinal tract induce weightloss after the operation, where other methods did not yield any effective weight reduction (e.g. with dietary change and/or by sports), and may thus reduce the risk of subsequent and additional risks of obesity. On request, health insurance providers will pay the costs for obesity surgery.

Preconditions for an invasive intervention to treat obesity are:

  • BMI over 35 kg/m² with additional diseases or BMI over 40 kg/m²
  • Obesity for more than 3 years
  • Between 18 and 65 years of age
  • Failed conservative attempts for weight reduction

In a detailed anamnesis with the patient, reasons for obesity, such as dietary behavior, side-effects of medication or hormonal disturbances can be addressed while previous attempts for weight reduction are registered. Finally, we choose the suitable surgical intervention, and set up an after-care plan with the patient.

Our obesity surgery in Vienna offers the following procedures:

  • Gastric balloon
  • Roux-Y gastric bypass
  • Omega loop gastric bypass
  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Gastric banding

Regardless of the type of surgery, it is important to create a support network for the patient in after-care and long-term therapy. This comes from obesity centers via psychologists and dietary consultants to self-aid groups, since obesity surgery can only yield long-term effects if the individuals change their life style and get support therein.
